working with young people

Alongside her professional therapist qualifications, Sylvia Milton holds a Youth Leadership Certificate, City & Guilds 924 Youth Training Certificate and Royal Society of Arts qualification in the development of Learning, and Open University Certificate in Educational Psychology.

She has spent four years working with special needs adolescents as part of the old Youth Training Scheme (YTS) run by Islington Council and set up by the Manpower Commission, for vulnerable young people.

She trained those young people in vocational office skills, found them work experience placements, counselled them when necessary, with regard to personal and employment issues, and facilitated the journey from dependent child to independent young person.

Her work with a number of other youth training schemes included Training the Trainers who were working with young people, in various aspects of counselling, and specific young people related issues.

In addition, Sylvia has worked for numerous Blue Chip companies, including the Bank of England, the Stock Exchange, BP and others, training staff who were responsible for working with young people on their work placements. She designed and delivered training courses that covered the issues specific to young people, and the attitude, skills and knowledge that staff required to manage their problems.

In her practice over the past 22 years, when counselling couples, Sylvia has often had to deal with the problems that parents were having with their adolescent children. Often she has been asked to help those adolescents and families. While she does not profess to be a specialist trained adolescent counsellor, she has assessed, advised and/or referred for specialist professional help where and when asked.

In short, Sylvia has many years’ experience and undertanding of the issues that trouble young people, and the approaches necessary to help.
