psychodynamic counselling

The essence of the Psychodynamic Counselling approach is that insight effects change, while the essence of Integrative Therapy is to bring together a collection of therapies which can usefully serve the client though a more expansive approach to the resolution of the client’s situation.

Psychodynamic Counselling is from the field of psychoanalysis and it means that when looking at the problem(s) a person is experiencing today, the therapist needs to be aware of the person’s past, their development, their personal circumstances and upbringing, and how this may inform the person’s resilient response and ability to cope and move forward appropriately.

Sylvia uses this approach each time in the Initial Assessment and Formulation of the Treatment Plan to facilitate a thorough in-depth analysis of the information given by the client, to enable her to devise the most helpful and appropriate Treatment Plan.
It is also extremely helpful when using the Psychodynamic approach to consider the client’s individual response, and the specific patterns of behaviour which may be self-defeating and/or self destructive and repetitive, thereby preventing real change to take place in their life.
